Whether you’d like to admit it or not, how you present yourself is important. It is even more important when you are on the arm of a newly graduated sailor/soldier in front of all his commanding officers and chiefs…
For Taylor’s bootcamp graduation, I wanted to look good not only for myself but for Taylor’s sake as well. Not too conservative but not have everything hanging out. Be professional and classy without looking matronly.
So that brought me to the question: What the hell do I wear?
I didn’t go to Taylor’s bootcamp graduation but I went to see him a couple hours after and I wore a plain dress with some flowers on it featured below:
Because I couldn’t afford a plane ticket, I missed his “A” School graduation. So, no worries on what to wear there. But now we are coming up on his Nuclear Power School graduation (which I wouldn’t miss for the world) and I am stuck.
I asked Taylor and he was no help what so ever. He just said, “Anything you want but I’m wearing my blues.”
Okay. Yeah. No help.
I asked him what other sailor’s girlfriends usually wear to these things and his response was, “dresses.”
Again, no help. Were we talking homecoming dresses? Summer dresses? Could I just wear a skirt and shirt?
I ended up wearing a Black floral print romper with some wedges to his graduation and it was perfect. I saw all sorts at his graduation ranging from girls who had everything, and I mean everything, hanging out to girls who looked like they just rolled out of bed.
I recommend neither of those…
Stick to your own style, pick something you are comfortable wearing and be professional.
A good rule of thumb is that if you plan on having a bit of cleavage show, don’t show your legs. If you plan on showing leg, don’t let the girls hang out. Think first day of school , job interview dressy or Easter Sunday best. You are representing your SO and your family so keep that always in your mind.
You may do a bit of walking so plan for that as well and also plan for the weather. Most of all, be yourself and have fun with your outfit!
