My name is Julia and my boyfriend’s name is TJ. We have been “officially” dating for 6 months but I’ll get to that later. He is an AO in the Navy and has been in for about a year and a half. He is stationed in Virginia Beach, Virginia and I am a junior at Georgia Southern University.
We met in middle school… He was in the marching band and I was on the dance/flag line. I was in 8th grade and he was in 7th. We started out as friends but the more I got to know him, of course, I fell for him. We stayed friends for a while and eventually I got over my crush and both started dating other people. Eventually I got into a long-term relationship and so did he and our friendship slowly disappeared. We kept in touch after I graduated (since I’m a year older than him, he was still in school) he would message me on Facebook asking how I was. Then he joined the Navy and we only would talk every few months.
Well around March 2015 my relationship failed and it just so happened his did too. So naturally we started talking trying to comfort each other and from that it turned into flirting. After a month or two of constant flirting we knew exactly where we wanted the friendship to go. BUT he was a gentlemen and said he wasn’t going to officially ask me to be his girlfriend unless he could in person. So even though technically we were in a relationship… it wasn’t official yet. I came home from college for the summer but had already committed to a summer job. So I saved up all of my pay checks and in July I drove from Athens, Ga to Virginia Beach. We had to meet in a McDonald’s parking lot because, of course, I ended up taking the wrong exit and he had to come rescue me. I arrived on Sunday morning and that afternoon he told me to dress up really nice because we were going out!
After an amazing night we got back to the hotel and layers down for bed… I was sad because I was sure he was going to ask me to be his girlfriend. I was almost asleep when he rolled over, kissed me on the forehead and asked me to be his girlfriend. The whole week was amazing except for the fact that he was on nights so he didn’t get off until midnight so when he would get off we would ride his motorcycle to McDonald’s and get chicken nuggets at 1 in the morning… Where he told me he had the biggest crush on me in high school. (lol)
So after a week in paradise, I had to go home and it killed me to leave him. Since we’ve been together he has been able to come see me maybe once a month and I’ve gone to see him twice. Our love for each other grew as we grew and here we are six months from that day in Virginia still as happy as ever.
Hopefully within the next year we will be able to move in with each other and start our lives together! Sometimes the distance is hard to deal with but in the end… It’s all worth it and I love him more than anything.
